Learn Spanish in Latin America – Much More Than Learning a Language

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Many people choose to learn Spanish in Latin America because of the wide range of incredible locations in which to learn the language. Students can choose a beach location like Montanita in Ecuador, or a very historic town like Cusco, high up in the Andean Mountains of Peru. Whether you want to explore archaeological sites, experience indigenous culture, observe wildlife, or simply laze on unspoilt beaches, Latin America provides all the ingredients for the perfect learning experience. If you want to see the jungle or have always wanted to go to Machu Picchu, then take a Spanish course that facilitates these aspirations. For example, El Paraiso Spanish Language School (Costa Rica) enables students to stay in Manuel Antonio National Park, with its beautiful beaches and extraordinary biodiversity. ACUPARI Language School (Peru) is based in Cusco, the amazing capital of the ancient Inca Empire. Some students divide their time between two locations so they can explore the natural and cultural diversity of Latin America. Another reason people choose to learn Spanish in Latin America is the immense choice of courses available. They range from private one-to-one tuition to a myriad of specialized programmes. For example, Interhispanica (Argentina) offer Spanish and Latin American economy classes. OLÉ (Mexico) offer specially designed programmes for children, teenagers and seniors. Educacion Para Todos (Guatemala) offer customised programmes for social science and medical professionals. Most language schools offer special modules to meet the needs and personal interests of students.A popular option is to combine a Spanish course with some volunteer work, either once you have finished your language course or during the time when you are not attending lessons. Typical areas of work include helping out in orphanages or nursery schools, working in local community projects, assisting with wildlife or conservation projects. Volunteer Latin America provides information on over one hundred Spanish language schools that offer volunteer work and internships. One such school is Tandem Santiago – Escuela de Idiomas Violeta Parra (Chile), which arranges internships for high school graduates and college students throughout Chile. Many language schools enable students to combine a Spanish course with adventure and sporting activities. For example, Andean Global Studies (Ecuador) offer Spanish classes combined with diving, surfing or kiteboarding. The Mariposa Spanish School and Eco Hotel (Nicaragua) organizes horse riding trips to the Masaya Volcano. A wide range of outdoor pursuits and activities are offered at other language schools including trekking, paragliding, rock climbing, river rafting, skiing and snowboarding. In addition to the Spanish courses, most language schools offer extra-curricular activities to suit the tastes of all students. This includes attending sporting events, jungle hikes, guitar lessons, cooking classes, movie evenings, trips to the theatre, parties, and excursions to local places of interest (archaeological sites, indigenous communities, national parks, etc). From the evidence cited above, it is easy to understand why many people choose to learn Spanish in Central or South America. There isn’t anywhere better to combine a language course with learning new skills and having fun. For example, a Spanish course combined with Salsa, Merengue or Tango dance lessons is a great way of meeting other like-minded travellers and having fun. Many students forge lifelong friendships through such an experience. So what are you waiting for? Immerse yourself in the Spanish language and culture of Latin America for the most rewarding educational experience of your life. Forget about Spain, where the accent isn’t as attractive and prices far higher than in Latin America.

What to See and Do in Peru

Monday, December 14th, 2009

The Life List.  Everyone has made a list of some sort or other in their lives.  It is a list of goals and dreams that most of the time is put away in a drawer and forgotten about.  But don’t wait too long like Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson did in the movie The Bucket List. You might not be as lucky to find a millionaire to whisk you around the world checking off your wish list in a few short months before you kick the bucket.  It is time to start fulfilling your dreams and one of the best places to start is in the country of Peru.Filled with incredible scenery, famous sights and offering several adrenaline filled activities Peru is the perfect choice to start checking off the things that you have always wanted to see and do but were too afraid to try. It doesn’t take long before you have actually made it through a large chunk of your list during your stay.Machu Picchu is at the top of most peoples list. If there is one thing that you must see in your life is one of the greatest ruins on the planet and this one is as good as it gets. Located in the Andes Mountains it is a mesmerizing Inca Ruin top a 2500 meter mountain. Take in the sight as you sit on another peak overlooking Machu Picchu and try to imagine how it was built over  600 years ago with no technology.  Make sure to arrive early to beat the crowds and feel the magic as the cloud and mist burns off.  Machu Picchu consists of 200 buildings that terrace down the side of a steep mountain leading in to the deep valley below. Whether you hike the Inca Trail visit Macchu Picchu, or take the train on a breathtaking journey through the Andes, you will not be disappointed. Many people are looking for a thrill when they make their life list.  Jumping out of an airplane seems to be atop many lists.  If you happen to visit Lima, you can take that goal and give it a twist to try paragliding.  Walk down to the waterfront of Mira Flores and you will soon find a place where people sign up to jump off of a high cliff over the Pacific Ocean. The fun doesn’t stop there however, once your parachute catches the air, you and your instructor will be able to ride the airwaves high above the city as he steers you through sky scapers and over the ocean.  It is one of the most unique experiences you will have in your life and you will have the same thrill and excitement as skydiving, but in a more exotic location than your local airstrip. Many people want to see one of the great deserts of the world. The Sahara or Kalahari are a couple of famous ones, but did you know that Peru has some of the largest sand dunes on the planet?  Located in the region of Ica, you can go on a tour deep into the desert by dune buggy. This isn’t your every day relaxing buggy ride however, you will be plunging down near vertical cliffs only to spin out at the bottom and take off again at top speed over the desert dunes.  Not only that, you will be treated to an introduction to sand boarding.  Feel the freedom as you surf in the sand or hop on your board like a sled and whiz down the hill into the valley below. It will make you feel like a kid again. We all know about Oasis from movies and television, but how many people have actually seen one and stayed on its shores overnight. Huacachina is a village built around a natural lake in the middle of the desert called the Oasis of America.  It is an incredibly beautiful location.  There are only about 10 hotels most with swimming pools and the giant dunes right in your backyard. You can rent pedal boats to float around the small Oasis and spend the day relaxing by the waters edge taking in the incredible once in a lifetime opportunity. If wild life is on your list, you will be in for a real treat when you visit Isla Ballestas.  Located near Pisco, you can catch a tour boat to take you out to sea to view sea lions, penguins, Peruvian boobies and condors as well as millions of birds in this nature reserve.  Your boat will take you out to beautiful rock formations located off shore where wildlife is free to live and play in a protected area.  Take the once in a lifetime opportunity to see actual penguins play in their natural setting and watch the hundreds of sea lions bask in the sun on the beach or on the rocks. You will not be disappointed, although make sure to ask your operator if they are sensitive to the animal and do not take their boats too close to shore disrupting the wildlife with exhaust pollution and the loud engines of the boats.  Responsible tourism is a must. These are just a few of the things that you can do in Peru to kick start your “Bucket List”. There are so many other things to see and do like visit Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world, see real life catacombs in Lima or take a flight over the Nazca Lines. These lines are a mystery of the world etched in the sand over 2000 years ago. Shaped in the forms of spiders, monkeys, sharks and lizards, nobody really know what their purpose is or how they were made. Want to visit the jungle? A good portion of Peru is located in the Amazon basin where you can explore one of the most fabled and vast rainforests on the planet.  So go to Peru soon and start living that life list rather than just dreaming about it. What are you waiting for? Go out there and start your life list. Life is short so you better get going and visiting Peru is a quick and easy way to check off a lot of dreams and wishes in a short amount of time.

The Top 10 Ski Resorts in Switzerland

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Copyright (c) 2009 Jason Boehle

With brilliant white snow and crisp clean air, Switzerland represents an amazing opportunity to hit the slopes.

Listed below is a breakdown of Switzerlands top 10 resorts and places to ski. These locations represent some of the finest skiing resorts in the world!

10. Arosa – Doubling as both a summer and winter resort, Arosa is located in the Eastern section of Switzerland. Arosa, with its traditions and unusual history, cannot be fully experienced in one trip. So how are the slopes? Arosa has over 50 miles of pristine terrain for you to fully immerse in. The air is especially pure and the slope drop offs will challenge even the most experienced skiers. Nature lovers will also enjoy the relative isolation of Arosa as compared to some of the other resorts on this list

9. Gstaad/Saanenland – Looking for a ski resort where you can gain some experience without be subjected to extremely difficult courses? If so, then Gstadd might be the place for you. Their courses attract mostly beginners and intermediate skiers because the slopes aren’t as insane as some of the other locations in Switzerland. The only drawback for me is Gstaad is a bit on the pricey side. Swank hotels, trendy shops, and upscale restaurants are a common sight throughout. However, if money is not an obstacle, you will be pleased to know that the Gstadd/Saanenland area is one of the largest ski resorts in the Alps.

8. Murren – Murren is truly a picturesque sight to see. Located on a high cliff in Lauterbrunnen Valley over 5,400 ft. in the air, this mountain village can only be reached by cable car. During the rare occasion where snow is in its top form, you will have no problem finding other activities to do. However, during peak snow season you will find that Murren offers some of the best snow and slopes around, attracting more advanced skiers.

7. Davos/Klosters – Davos is located in East Switzerland on the Landwasser River. The popularity of Davos has tailed off a bit from its heyday and the village is a bit rundown. Klosters offers a better alternative and brings in many skiers from The Netherlands and UK. This region offers ample slopes for the less experienced skier. First class hiking and fine dining located thousands of feet in the air, are just a few things to do.

6. Laax/Films/Falera – This area offers a wide range of summer sports. The winter months provide ample opportunity for world class competitions. Skiing and snowboarding are just a few of the many top notch events that attracts visitors. Combinded, the Laax/Films/Falera area occupies over 130 sq. miles of prime skiing opportunities. The Vorab Glacier and Crap Sogn Gion attract much of the cross country skiing crowd while Foppa and Nagens represent an awesome downhill alternative for beginner and intermediate skiers. The lodging accommodations are reasonable and isn’t as pretentious as say Gstaad. If crowds aren’t your thing be sure to book your trip during the weekdays, the locals take advantage of the prime snow conditions during the weekends.

5. Saas-Fee – Saas-Fee is located in southwest Switzerland, next to Zermatt, and is home to the highest mountain in all of Switzerland, The Dom. What attracts many visitors to Saas-Fee is the amount of glacial activity. Glaciers of the Dom and the Allalinhorn allow for year-round sports activities, including summer skiing in some locations. With a wide range of blue rating slopes, Saas-Fee brings in much of the intermediate and advanced enthusiast. Don’t be intimidated, however. There are also many slopes and schools of training for beginners.

4. Grindelwald – Next on my list is Grindelwald, which lies in the valley of Bernese Oberland, located very close to the middle of Swizterland. With over 120 miles of prime ski slopes, Grindelwald skiers have many different areas to choose from, most choose the Kleine Scheidegg for a fine sking experience. What sets this location apart from the others are the slopes accesabile only by helicopter. Griendwald has some of the best helicopter skiing in the world! In addition, you will be amazed to find that Grindelwald is a hub for activity. If you ever get tired of the slopes, (highley unlikely) Grindelwald is filled with museums, top notch golf courses, and a wide array of other adventure sports.

3. St. Moritz – Fancy a place with over 300 days of sunshine, superb housing, and a resort full of ancient history? If so, then St. Moritz is the place for you! Located in the far south east corner of Switzerland, St. Moritz is one of the most famous destinations in Switzerland. Beginners will enjoy the area of Corviglia where you will experience relatively easy slopes while advanced skiers will soak up the mind-numbing bliss of Pontresina. The view is said to be majestic. However, as with many of the other higher end resorts in Switzerland, be prepared to spend a bit of money!

2. Verbier – The runner up on my list of top places to ski in Switzerland is Verbier. As one of the more popular Swiss resorts in the Alps, the slopes can get a bit crowded during peak season. The slopes stay in pristine condition during the Spring months and make for a wonderful alternative to the sometimes overcrowded winter. The wide assortments of unique and challeneging courses suits both beginners and advanced skiers. Tortin has consistently been rated as a top draw for experts while the numerous ski training locations in Verbier create a fun atmosphere for the beginner. In addition, superb hotels, dining, sporting activities, and night life make Verbier one of the world’s top ski destinations and tourist attractions.

1. Zermatt – Heard of Zermatt? If you haven’t heard about Switzerland’s greatest ski resort, you have now! In Zermatt, skiing is a year round affair. Enjoy the Sunegga and Gornergrat regions during the winter months and make your way over to the Theodul Glacier for a fine intermediate adventure during the warmer summer months. With great snow, a wide array of obstacles and challenges, and some of the cleanest, freshest air in the world, Zermatt caters to just about everyone. In addition to incredible skiing, Zermatt features some of the most beautiful, natural ice skating rinks and many other adventure sporting activities such as climbing and paragliding. The world famous Matterhorn draws locals and tourists alike to scale this magnificent mountain. Nature lovers will appreciate the car-free resort with unbelieveable natural hiking trails. To visit Zermatt is said to have a Zen-like feel and this is why Zermatt is my top place to ski in Switzerland!

Adventure sports – Playground of bold and beautiful

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Women have made it their business to break the barriers and make their marks in places you would least expect them to; adventure sports being one among them. Starting in 1975 when Junko Tabei became the first women to climb the Everest to Jessica Crisp who went on to become multiple World Champion in Windsurfing, women are giving a tough competition to their male counterparts.

Although women have taken to adventure sports since its inception it is sad to note that they have not been recognized for their participations. Speculations about whether a woman can take physical strain or not have been going on for a long time now. But the debate is being questioned severely as more and more women are seen indulging in extreme sports.

Be it Niki Gudex, a pro snowboarder or Lynn Hill an ace rock climber. There is no denying that women like in every other domain of their life are becoming known for pushing their limits and taking on themselves some self – directed action.

As much there is a need to clear the myth about women being able to do well in adventure sports there is also a dire need educate the masses about the accessibility of adventure sports. Adventure sports are not just for the tough ones. They are for everyone. They are so varied in their style that anyone who has the faintest of the idea about adventure can give it a try.

If I say adventure sports and you think of climbing the steepest hill on the planet, or spending days alone in Antarctica, you may also see that although these extreme sports sum up the essence of adventure they are not the only ones.  There are several other sports which do not require extreme training, neither great fitness levels. Paragliding, parasailing, hot-air ballooning, scuba diving and snorkeling are to name a few.

The misconceptions that adventure sports create in everyone’s mind can be challenged when you try out some of these sports. You would discover how all of these have a charm of their own. They all are addictive and so fun-filled that you would prefer adventure breaks to any other. The best about these sports is that they are more of a recreational activity, more for instant fun and thrill rather than something that has a long set of pre-requisites.

You may ask what pre-requisites I speak of here. Seasoned adventurers believe in constant practice and thorough training. For them climbing a mountain peak or swimming an ocean is serious business and probably the only task at hand for the time being. Hence being well toned and masculine becomes a priority for them. The dedication of these seasoned adventurers however should not stop us from trying out different activities. As said before adventure sports are many, not all require the participant to be perfect and fit.

In fact what you can try out is to indulge in the fun activities and gradually proceed onto the tougher more challenging tasks. It may take time but don’t you worry people, if you have the will to move ahead, there is no stopping you.
